Option 2 Aperio RS485 Hub (AH30)

In this architecture the PMT Security Controller communicates with the AH40 Aperio IP Hub(s) over a direct serial (RS485) connection. Each Controller can support:

  • Up to 8 Aperio Hubs.
  • Up to 64 Aperio Locks.
  • All 64 locks can be routed via a single Aperio Hub or up to 8 Hubs with 8 locks each.

Hardware Installation

  • Install the PMT Security Controller(s).
  • Install the Aperio Wireless Lock(s).
  • Install the Aperio Hub(s) (AH30 or AH40).

Note: The Aperio hardware must be installed in compliance with ASSA Abloy’s requirements / recommendations.

Aperio Software Configuration

Aperio Software Installation

  • Install the Aperio Programming Application.
  • Connect the Aperio Wireless Radio Dongle onto the same machine.
  • Launch the Aperio Software.
  • Create a new installation.
  • The installation name should be a meaningful name that will identify the installation in the future. Possibly consider using a business name or address.
  • The password entered here will be required every time you need to later make changes to the configuration of a communication hub or one of its paired locks. The password must be at least 8 characters long and container at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter and one number.
  • The Key File is received from Aperio and should be unique per installation to ensure maximum security. Once the Aperio Installation has been locked to Customer mode, only the correct Key File will be able to access the site

Aperio Hub Configuration

  • Use the Quick Scan button to search for a communication hub to configure.
  • Select the communication hub from the scan results.
  • Right-click the hub and select “Configure”.
  • Security Mode: Only set the hub to “Customer Mode” once it has been connected to OMNIA. OMNIA specifies the certificate used for secure communications.
  • Electronic Access Controller Settings:
  • EAC Addressing Mode: Normal address offset (do not change).
  • Lock Access Decision Timeout: This value sets the time (in seconds) the lock will wait for an access decision from the EAC. Default value is acceptable for OMNIA.
  • Remote Unlock: This function enables the Remote unlock functionality in the communication hub. Set this value to 0 hours and 1 minutes.
  • EAC Credential Settings: Select the credentials to be used with the Aperio Locks and OMNIA. UID Reverse Byte Order must be selected for all active credential types.
  • Network and ACU Settings:
  • Network Settings: The subnet mask and gateway of the hub can be configured here.
  • Note: The IP Address of the hub can be changed on the main screen by right-clicking the hub and selecting “Change IP Address”.
  • ACU Settings: The ACU is the OMNIA Controller that will be paired with the hub. Enter the IP address of the controller as the ACU address. The port should not be changed (default is 9999).
  • “Enable TLS” must be checked.

Note: The RS485 Hub (AH30) does not require the configuration above as it will be directly connected to the controller via RS485 serial cable.

  • Radio Channels Setting: Used to configure radio communications between the locks and the hub. This configuration is not required for integration with OMNIA.
  • Status Report Interval: This is the duration that the locks will report their status back to the hub. Leave as default for the OMNIA integration (60 mins).
  • Device Update: Click “Apply” to save the configuration settings to the hub. Any specific changes that were made will be listed in the window.

Aperio Lock Configuration

Current configuration settings are not always displayed. For example, when configuring the status report interval, the current value is not read from the device, instead the default value is displayed.

  • Pair the communication hub with locks. Right-click the communications hub, select Communication Hub followed by Pair with a lock or sensor.
  • The user has 30-seconds to present a tag to the locks that should be paired with the communication hub. This step can be repeated if required.
  • Check that all of the locks that were expected to be paired with the communication hub are displayed in the main window.
  • Configure the Aperio Locks. Right-click the lock from the main configuration window, -> select lock sensor -> select configure. This will launch a configuration wizard that will take you through the steps required to configure the locks.
  • RFID Configuration: In this section you need to enable the tag / credential technology that the lock will use.
  • RFID Search Order: Specify the order in which the lock should try technologies to read a tag. The most used technology should be at the top of the list to save on battery usage.
  • Credential Data Conversion: Leave as default (“No conversion”) for OMNIA.
  • Smart Credential Cache: Allows the locks to store up to 200 credentials (authorized in the last 30 days). Only recommended for emergency offline situations as this could undermine the access decisions made by OMNIA.
  • Card Read Detection Configuration: This setting determines how specific cards are read. This configuration does not apply specifically to the OMNIA integration and should only be configured if the card technology used requires it.
  • Bluetooth LE (Only Visible for Compatible Locks): This setting will be visible for Bluetooth-compatible locks. This configuration does not apply specifically to the OMNIA integration and should only be configured if mobile/Bluetooth credentials will be used at this site.
  • Keypad Configuration: Enable the keypad if the keypad will be used (e.g. Personal Access Codes, Reason Codes etc.).
  • The PIN reading mode can be set to either a length or to use an End character. An end character is recommended for most use with OMNIA.
  • Escape and Return Configuration: No OMNIA configuration required.
  • Escape and Return Activation Indication: No OMNIA configuration required.
  • Escape and Return Cancellation Indication: No OMNIA configuration required.
  • Privacy Mode: This setting allows the occupant to restrict access to the room, even to supervisors, until the privacy mode is deactivated. To activate it on a properly configured lock, you press a privacy button on the inner side of the door, and the door must be closed and locked for the mode to engage. This setting is not required for the OMNIA integration.
  • Override Credential: Optional configuration. Override credentials are useful for accessing a location during an emergency or during maintenance of the network or access control system. Always keep override credentials in a safe place.
  • Security Mode: The lock should be set to customer mode for secure communications.
  • Radio Channels: This section is used to configure Radio Channels used by the Aperio Locks. No configuration required for OMNIA.
  • Locking Parameters: These settings affect how long the lock will be open for etc. Not specifically required for OMNIA.
  • Try to unlock timeout: The lock will try to unlock within this period of time.
  • Lock open time: The period of time the lock will be open for during allowed event.
  • Lock jammed alarm timeout: Lock is considered jammed after this period of time.
  • Lock jammed retry period: Retry period can be enabled.
  • Lock jammed indication mode: Configuration to show if the lock is jammed.
  • Card Read and Key Press Indicator: Configure the indication for a tag or key press
  • Sensor Events: This configuration is not necessary for the OMNIA integration. This value can be left as “Always enabled”.
  • Device Settings: None of these settings are required for the OMNIA integration.
  • Status Report Interval: This determines how often the lock will report its status to the hub. Default value (60 minutes) does not need to be modified.
  • Battery Check Interval: Battery Check Interval: This is the interval for checking the battery on the lock. This does not need to be configured for the OMNIA integration.
  • Polling Interval: This is the interval for polling the lock. This does not need to be configured for the OMNIA integration.
  • Audit Trail Retention Period: Configure the retention period for audit records (not required for OMNIA).
  • Device Update: Click “Apply” to update the configuration of the lock.

Current configuration settings are not always displayed. For example, the override credentials section does not show current override credentials. Any changes that you make will be the actual settings used. For example, when loading override credentials, the newly added credentials will replace the old credentials.

OMNIA Software Configuration

Once all the Aperio hubs and wireless locks have been configured, the hardware needs to be installed and configured in OMNIA. At a high-level the controller(s) need to be installed in OMNIA. The Aperio locks will be detected automatically and added as “Readers”, which can be assigned to “Doors” in the software.

Install Controllers

The Aperio locks will be shown automatically on the “Bus” for the Controller in OMNIA. PMT Security’s “Application Controller” (compatible with the Aperio AH40 IP Hubs) is shown in the example below.

  • Either using the Discovery Application or directly on the OMNIA Server Application, find and configure the IP settings of the controller on the network.
  • Note: The default controller password is “masterkey”.
  • Standard configuration is acceptable. No changes to default ports is required.
  • Once the IP settings of the controller have been configured, navigate to Setup → Hardware → Install in the client software application to add the controller into OMNIA.
  • Select the controller from the list, click “Scan Bus”. The Aperio locks will appear in the list of Discovered Devices.
  • Once the Aperio locks have been discovered, click “Install”.
  • The Aperio Locks will be automatically installed. If selected, new doors will be added automatically.
  • Under Setup → System → Doors, configure the Aperio doors and readers.
  • Configure the relevant Access Groups (Enrollment → Access → Access Groups) and assign them to the relevant Tagholders.
  • Once the Controllers, Aperio Readers, Access Groups and Tagholders are configured, perform a Full Upload (Setup → Networking → Services) to send all the data to the controllers.
  • Test the Aperio Locks by presenting a valid credential to them. An “Allowed Normal In” event should be seen in the OMNIA Transactions.
